Although Kingston is the capital city of Jamaica and overlooks the world's seventh-largest natural harbor, it's a destination on the island many tourists overlook. Of course there certainly are parts of Kingston that it would be wise to avoid, and tourists should exercise the same caution they would in any other unfamiliar city. Still, Kingston is full of cultural and historical attractions including museums, art galleries, theaters, good restaurants and great shopping. This bustling city is the center of government and commerce for Jamaica, sandwiched between the backdrop of the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. There are many wonderful sights to explore, like the Victoria Crafts Market where you can bargain on souvenirs; the Bob Marley Museum where you can see the late musician's home and recording studio; and Devon House, a historic mansion where you can learn something about Jamaica's old plantation past. Learn about Jamaican art at the National Gallery and Jamaican flora at Hope Gardens near the University of the West Indies campus. Visit Fort Charles with its canons, no longer defending the port but still pointing out to the sea, and stroll the square called the Parade, which British soldiers once used for drills. Then there is Port Royal, where pirates once roamed, located on the Palisadees Peninsula. The Maritime Museum and Museum of Historical Archaeology help tell of Jamaica's past, as does the Giddy House which tilts at a 45-degree angle. You can learn about Kingston and Jamaica through its performance art as well. Kingston is the birthplace of reggae music and you'll find hot spots playing reggae, soca, calypso and more. You can take in a performance at the Little Theatre, listen to the Philharmonic Symphony or watch the grace and elegance of the National Dance Theatre Company. Don't forget to take in a game of cricket when in season at Sabina Park. It's the country's national sport. Nearby, find some sport of your own as you bike or hike in the Blue Mountains, or scuba dive past buried ruins of Port Royal, which sunk during an earthquake centuries ago.
