Jamaica was once a British colony, and as such retains some of that heritage throughout the island. Nowhere is British heritage more pronounced then in the country's national sport - cricket. Jamaicans are very passionate about this sport and the games are often filled with spectators. While the rules can be a bit difficult for the uninitiated to understand, it's worth attending a game during your trip if a game is being played. Sabina Park in Kingston is the main place to watch cricket, although there are other parks in Montego Bay and near Spanish Town.
Cricket involves two teams of eleven players each - that's the easy part to explain. Then on each team there are such positions as bowlers and batsmen, wicket keepers and fielders. There are innings, runs and umpires - as in baseball - but the goal of the game and the way it's played are completely different. You'll just have to see for yourself! The contrast between this truly British game and the decidedly Jamaican crowd is worth seeing.
